Take the Pledge

Signing the following pledge is a way of solidifying your commitment to the Contraction & Convergence Campaign. Not only does this help you get involved, but it also helps us know that people are committed to the campaign in a lasting way.
You can also download it as a PDF for printing/distribution.

By signing this pledge, I am stating that I support Contraction & Convergence as a lasting and international solution to climate change. I am concerned about the human-induced climate changes to our planet, support the key principles of Contraction & Convergence, which are:

1 Contraction of global greenhouse gas emissions. We all know the story. Humans have pumped far more greenhouse gases into the Earth’s atmosphere than the planet can handle. This has led to disastrous consequences for communities, ecosystems and agriculture. These consequences will only get worse, unless we stabilise greenhouse gas emissions at a level with minimal impact.

2 Convergence to equitable allocation of greenhouse gas emission quotas. At present, developed countries such as the US contribute more than their fair share of greenhouse gas emissions. Equitable international allocation means that each person in the world is assigned a equal quota of CO2 and thus each country gets a quota relative to its population. .

3 Trading of international carbon quotas. This principle allows some flexibility in how much a single country can pollute, whilst still maintaining an overall global reduction in greenhouse gas emissions. If one country falls below its greenhouse gas allowance, it can sell a portion of its quota to a country that couldn’t quite reach its goal. This system is expected to create a multi-billion US$ market for investment in carbon-reducing technologies.

In addition to supporting the key principles listed above, I pledge to take the following actions to play my part in mitigating climate change (select as many as you’d like!):

1 (tick box) I will contact my MP to show my support for Contraction & Convergence. This could be as simple as a short e-mail, or a letter with lots of signatures, urging your MP to take action on Climate Change. Advocate Contraction & Convergence as a durable solution to Climate Change!

2 (tick box) I will sign the petition to Tony Blair, urging the adoption of C&C policies. We’d like to get 2000 signatures on this petition by May 1, 2007, so this is a big step in and of itself! Read more (and add your name!) at the following link:

3 (tick box) I will urge my Student Union to pass a motion in support of Contraction & Convergence. This garners support from universities across the UK. As history tells us, universities and university students have almost always been at the forefront of political and social movements. We have the goal of having 30 Student Unions passing motions in support of Contraction & Convergence by May 1, 2007, so this is a big deal!

4 (tick box) I will set-up a charter at my university to advance the Contraction & Convergence campaign. Big or small, by setting up your own group, you can make change possible. It’s up to you what your group does—you could have an educational campaign, bring speakers to your university, or produce some materials, or secure your university’s commitment to Contraction & Convergence. Contact teamleader@climatejustice.org.uk to join the national network!

I, the undersigned, support the key principles of Contraction & Convergence, and have pledged to take the ticked actions above to make a difference.

Sincerely,
